Joseph Sloan was born in 1940 in Co. Down, Ireland. His career began in professional theatre where he worked for nine years, before his passion for sculpting lead to a career change, eventually finding him as a wood-engraving tutor.
His sensitive approach to three dimensional form has been widly recognised and appreciated both in the UK, Ireland ad more recently in France, following his move there in 1997.
He is regarded as an innovator in his field, often working through themes within his sculptures. The Conductor Series combining high finish of the bronze with sweeping, sinuous movement. His still life series of cheese boards has a tactile, surreal quality and the ‘working the land’ series indicated the strength of the Shepherd and the solitary knature of the Farmer.
Joseph Sloan’s portfolio continues to grow, not just in subject matter, but in importance as he is recognised as a major player in this demanding field with work in collections all over the world.
