Esko Sihtola is a Finnish artist, born in 1937, He lives and works in Hanko, a small coastal resort and harbour town in Southern Finland. Best known as an oil painter, his favourite views are taken from the Nordic archipelago and show traditional landscapes bathed in a shimmering light. Fisherman's villages, old boat houses and ships from the main part of his compositions, and the sea is ever present. He paints his views gently, always paying attention to the calm feeling of the landscape.
We held Esko’s first UK exhibition in 1989 and he was a featured artist with us in 1991. Since then demand for his work in America and Scandinavia have taken much of his time, but happily he has been able to turn his attention to us more recently, as well as managing to produce 17 paintings for the newly refurbished Sheraton hotel in Helsinki.
